When Legacies Collide | Stories From When Hamilton and Schumacher's Careers Crossed Paths

After Lewis Hamilton equalled Michael Schumacher's win record yesterday, I'm sure there will be a lot of GOAT debates incoming. However, I didn't want to go down that route. Here, I take a look back at a few moments where these two legends crossed paths on and off the track.

  • Lewis Hamilton is undoubtedly one of the greatest ever. I find it hard appointing a definitive ‘greatest of all-time’ driving-wise because every all-time great was exceptional at different things. They also all drove in eras with different rules, different driving styles, different competition etc. I obviously have my opinion on who I think is the greatest - but it’s just an opinion - which is why I tend to shy away from those debates as they seem pointless. For me, what Lewis has had to endure throughout his career even to this day and how he has overcome those obstacles is what truly makes him special. Despite the racial abuse he is subjected to year after year, he has risen to the very top to soon become the most successful F1 driver in history. I don’t think anyone has had to endure the same level of adversity ever. People may not see it now, but we are witnessing history before our very eyes.

    • I gave, Michael Schumacher the nickname 'Mick Dasterdly' because, just like his cartoon namesake, Dick Dasterdly he was clearly the best driver but he was known to employ questionable tactics from the lead. It brought an actual tear to my eye when young. Mick Schumacher gave one of, Michael's helmets to, Lewis. It showed the genuine mutual respect they have for one another.

    • @V12F1Demon I'm way past REAL nasty. My favorites are (morons, rubes, imbeciles and low IQ). Nothing racial about my 'insuts', but they are far more effective on unintelligent people, "I'm not stupid", says The Stupid One. "I'm not a racist", says the Racist. FACT:All racist are haters however all haters aren't necessarily racist.

    • @Clifford English Fair enough and it's your call. Though I don't understand why you're going out of your way to tell me there is racism in the world. I never denied that as, you seem to be mistakenly mixing up racism 'in general' to racism within F1. Those are two different things. I don't know why this has to be so contentious esp if you subscribe to the ideology that everyone's experience matters? Thank you for engaging in a civil chat.

    • @V12F1Demon I just erased a couple of long paragraphs dealing with a lifetime of racist, racism and 'Blind', "I'm not a racist" people. I'll stick to commenting on the subject of racing. I'll also not bother to engage in conversations with 'posts' that I know to be from people who've not 'walked' in my shoes, 'traveled' the streets of life with their 'eyes open' and come off with, "there's no racism in F1"! I disagree, however we, my wife and I still like watching F1, The Indy series and NHRA drag racing. I also watch MOTO GP, Isle of Man TT and various other forms of racing. I don't agree with you nor do I want to have a 'tete-a-tete' with you about 'Race'.

Different era's and different rules. I will watch F1 into the future and look forward to the new era of 2022 onwards. The show must go on. There is no definitive "Best Driver" of all time. Opinions are opinions & this will always allow for great debate and discussion. AS Barry White sang, "Let the music play"

  • As Ali said. You cannot compare eras. All you can do is be the greatest of your own era. I hope Raikonen, Alonso and Hamilton have stellar performances in their 40s. To negate Schumacher's battering - excuse - by Rosberg - over 3 seasons was due to age.

  • Don't know why it was so shocking. In GP2 and all the previous formulas. Hamilton was hailed as a generational talent. And in those days McLaren had the record of winning 1 every 4 races. What we didn't forsee was the demise of McLaren. The same can be said for Marc Marquez in Moto GP. Generational talent with a top team capable of usurping the current goat.

  • schumacher in 2012 was better than lewis 2014, the difference is the mercedes wasnt dominant in those years for example outqualifying rosberg by over a second 3 times that year, beating him by 3 tenths at australia and monza, 4 tenths at spa, 2 tenths at malaysia those performances would have been pole in later years, 10 poles in fact and would be good enough to beat lewis in equal cars

But I really wish I could have seen drivers from different eras race and just fully appreciate them for dominating their generation. As I keep researching and learning, I will eventually do lots of Schumi-related videos because there’s so much to talk about from his career. Everyone’s will have a different GOAT. There’s is no clear-cut ‘this guy is the greatest ever’. I believe in acknowledging greatness to whatever degree regardless of which driver I like. It’s something I value as a creator and to hear positive feedback like this means a lot. Thank you 😊

  • This video i like a lot. Why? Its because always in the most video's like this one they talk like who is the better driver. (Schumacher is better because bla bla bla bla... no no Hamilton is better because bla bla bla bla bla.) Or Senna is best. Or is it Nikki Lauda? I think you can not say who is the best. Its what we hear in this video. Schumacher was the best in his generation, and Hamilton in his generation. The same was for Senna and Lauda. All are the best of best. Max Verstappen never was worldchampion, and Lewis Hamilton allmost 7 times, but me personly think Verstappen is a better driver. Just to make a point. Yes, i really like this video.

    • Thank you 😊. I think it’s easy to get caught up in the moment of ‘Who is the best’ when it’s mostly subjective. It depends on what era you watched or who your favourite driver’s are. And everybody is entitled to their opinion which is the beauty of it. I have my opinions, you have your opinions. But we can both respect the other all-time greats as the best of their generation. In my opinion, if a comparison is objective, then it’s fine. But if it’s merely to debate who would win in what era etc. then that’s impossible given how much the sport has changed. The drivers are probably more skillful given how much technology has advanced and general evolution of the sport. It’s the same with other sports - basketball, football, rugby, hockey, tennis and so on. But what the other greats did in their era was amazing and should be acknowledged well.

  • I don't think either really get the full credit for their records because at times they've had such dominant cars. But both won world titles for different manufacturers - that's a very select club . Both also fought hard to secure titles and were equally impressive in their near misses - Lewis in his first season. Michael v Mika. Both also won in weak cars - Michaels's first couple of seasons at Ferrari and Lewis in latter McLaren years. Both awesome wheel to wheel . BMPHF1 - you are spot on - they are both the cream of their own eras.

    Mini Lite71Mini Lite71महीने पहले
    • Thank you! I find it weak when people just say ‘They drove the fastest car so that’s why they won’. Why were they in the fastest car in the first place? Because they were the best drivers of their time. The all-time greats have what is called an ‘X’ factor that separates them from the other talented drivers. They can deliver when it really matters most and quite frankly on their day, they’re untouchable. Both are legends and we should appreciate both of them for what they did. Of course that doesn’t mean that you can’t compare the two. If it’s done objectively and not to just favour one driver over another, then it can be fascinating to go deeper into how they both did it in their own unique ways. Not to say that one is better than the other, but rather, how did they gain that little bit extra over the rest of the competition. There will be similarities and there will be differences. But that’s the beauty of it. It’s all about the approach. Thanks for taking the time to comment and for watching 🙏

  • Lewis is far from being the "greatest" ever. The truth is the formula he has been driving for the last 4 years is above any other. Not even close really. At this level, with the likes of Vettel, Leclerc, Verstappen, etc. for Lewis to be lapping 2 seconds faster a lap than some of the very best drivers of today just goes to show the dominance of the MB. Any driver sitting on Lewis's car would be able to rack up win after win. Yes he is very good, but not the greatest. Let's see Lewis on a Ferrari or Alfa and lets see what he can do then. Not even close to the greatest...

    • Literally all I’m saying! Schumi has only ever had the highest praise for Lewis and it would be exactly the same if he was able to be there at the Eiffel GP. Sometimes the love for one driver can mean hate for the one who surpasses them. How about we acknowledge both as great? Of course, I could do an objective comparison e.g. look at how they became the best of their generation and what made them stand out amongst their peers. They’ve both done it in their own unique way which is special in itself. That’s the kind of comparison I would do. Not, ‘Who would win in a race?’

    jj356jj356महीने पहले
    • The cars are still manual - they just use paddle shifts. There’s also no traction control or ABS so I wouldn’t say the cars are easy to drive. They may be easier to drive than previous eras but are more complex in terms of technology. You have to make a lot more brake bias adjustments, strategic ERS deployment etc. which mean that you’re constantly making changes on your steering wheel every single lap. So this argument has no substance. Lewis can most definitely be classed as one of the greatest if not the greatest as he makes the best of the technology at his disposal in this current generation. Try again...

  • how can you say that Lewis Hamilton is the greatest driver he is an above average driver in the best car there is put Daniel, Charles, Max and even Sebastian in that car and Lewis no longer win a race the only reason Valtteri drives alongside Lewis is that he is willing to play second driver, so he will never become world champion in that car Nico had enough of that in 2016 and has decided to leave the role of second driver and go for the championship. that cost him a friendship and his job at Mercedes I've never heard Lewis piss so much about the car and strategy and the team as in 2016 now even if Lewis's plan doesn't work out as planned, he starts nagging again, really sad the comparison with Michael is irrelevant because the format then and now is not the same Michael is also not the greatest ever, Ayrton Senna remains

It’s bullshit lol, Lewis is a cock, he’s not one of the best of all time, he’s one of the best of this era certainly but not of all time that’s rubbish! To understand that you need to know the history of F1. I’ve met him, when I was lead marshal at one of his races. Behind the scenes away from the press he talks to people like shit and treats them pretty much the same. That’s not a legend. He’s a talented driver but not one of the best of all time those who think that I beg you to do some research on the history of F1 and all of the legends of the sport

That is to say many words towards the end of sentences drops off in volume and are difficult to pick up. I don’t think it is the accent, being from the US I grew up watching BBC on PBS. I would start with a high recording volume, one could EQ the voice to bring it out more during the fading areas. I’m sure the numbers will increase. Peace out.

  • This is the first time that the record has actually deserved the car more than the driver. Hamilton is a good driver but an over rated driver. But in reality Mercedes has made a car that blasts competition by far and fir some time. That means that most Hamilton victories has been relatively easy ones.

    Willy RiveroWilly Riveroमहीने पहले
    • I think you show some bias and ignorance on how Lewis and Mercedes work. Lewis has not been handed a finished package as many of his haters always claim. Ask Toto and he will set you straight. It is a bi-directional relationship when it comes to car development. Lewis has helped develop that car since day one and his inputs have helped the engineering team to improve and make the necessary modifications. Lewis doesn’t just drive the car, he ‘makes’ the car. It is up to the other drivers to do the same. But they don’t seem to know how to do it.

  • Michael was always "aggressive" with the steering wheel, at the time I thought unfairly. He took many cars out over the years. It's rare Lewis takes anyone out, in my opinion he is often too polite.

    MonaromanMonaromanमहीने पहले
    • Too polite definitely not. Pushes races rules right to the limit and on it yes. He's been naughty a few times slamming the door in Rosberg's face.

    • @AG Coarseman You must be younger than 30yrs old. I don't have the time or inclination to get into a tet-a-tet with you about your opinion regarding "Max being the greatest driver in this 'current' generation. Lewis is nowhere near". Only a blind person, a 'nerd', who likes to get a reaction by saying stupid stuff, for the sake of arguing or a true 'moron', who knows little about 'race craft' would say something so utterly not true. Adapting to a race courses changes over the period of 'the race weekend's. Adjusting to wind speed/direction, tyre and brake temperatures, when to ease up to regain traction. Max is learning how to stretch his tyres and brakes, but he still overdrives/overestimates his equipment too often. There are several instances this year that show he's still 'learning'. It should be a rare occurrence that these lapses take place. Lewis has his moments also. To me, too damn many. His excuse, "I'm only human". We can all use that one.

      Clifford EnglishClifford Englishमहीने पहले
    • @AG Coarseman Say hello to Max. I(you, we), can't watch F1 without seeing or hear his name being mentioned in comparison to L. Ham.(Martin Brundle, Jonny Herbert, P. DiResta, David Croft). "Lando Norris said he thought Max is the better driver. Me being a fanboy of Lewis', and I have a different opinion of their raceing craft. Max, is extremely good, currently I'd say a tie with Danny Ricc for number 'two'. He's gaining the knowledge of what Lewis already knows. Max does have seemingly 'natural' abilities, though. Of course his dad probably schooled him on many aspects of his style of driving. He's a very good driver. Way too hot headed, for me. Complains a lot more than Lewis.

      Clifford EnglishClifford Englishमहीने पहले
    • @AG Coarseman What makes you think he "will be even happier as a fan of another M.S.:):)". Hmm, I thought he was/is a fan of L.H., of course he could be a fan of both. Sons of 'greats' who follow in their fathers 'footsteps' are seldom as good as their dads, ie Richard Petty/Kyle Petty, Dale Earnhardt/Dale E. Jr, Rich Mears Sr/Rich Mears Jr, Graham Hill/Damon Hill. There are sons that out shine their fathers, Michael Andretti, son of Mario Andretti, Dale Jarrett, son of Ned Jarrett. Sometimes they are as mediocre as their fathers, example Nico Rosberg/Keke Rosberg. All of this was an exercise of showing that 'fans', usually like 'winners! We don't know if Frame Zaper's son is going to 'pick' Mick as a 'favorite' driver to follow', we'll have to wait and see.

  • Great video, I started watching F1 back in the 80s and my favorite driver was Senna. Then Lewis became my next favorite driver. For me the all time greats that I watched were Senna Prost Schumacher Hamilton I don't have greatest of all time because each of these drivers raced in different eras. But I'm happy to have witnessed some of the best drivers from the 80s to the present, and it is such a great achievement that Lewis has reached in the sport. It take teamwork to make feats like this happen.

    • Thank you Sam. At times, I wish time travel was a real thing. I really wish I could witness Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Stirling Moss, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher etc. all race in their respective eras. There’s nothing like experiencing greatness first hand as it’s happening - you appreciate it more. I try to research and educate myself as much as possible on Michael’s legacy, Senna’s legacy, Prost’s legacy etc. so that I at least have some knowledge of how great they were and how they paved the way for the current generation.

  • Whatever the quality of Lewis Hamilton, it's never an equal comparison when 2 people of different eras are compared. If we compare them we will understand that the driver of the earlier days were 5 times better. Now a days there are more races per year also which helps drivers achieve numbers fast. AND I'm sure race in LH case also helped him.

  • thank you!!! finally someone sees the big picture. ive said all along, that no two drivers can be compared fully from different eras. things like cars, rules, some tracks, everything is different. who says Lewis or ,MS would be able to compete with Fangio at that time? who says Fangio could do it today? Senna? all the greats,NOBODY can even begin to say this or that one is better. i dont believe in GOAT status either. thats BS!!! good video, sub'd,hit the bell icon and liked. all those who try to diminish Lewis wins and records, well they just plain haters, plain and simple.yes im a Lewis fan,but im also a fan of most on the grid too. most of the drivers. especially Seb,i do feel sorry for the guy,he isnt as bad as some people who never raced are saying. lost his way ? more than likely,bu tto say he is a crap driver? no,you dont become a 4 times WDC.i think you said it at the end perfectly, lets just appreciate these two and some other legends in thir prime times.

    • Thanks for subbing Ashley 😊. I’m also a big fan of many drivers and I appreciate that each and every great did the best with what they knew at the time. As the sport evolves, the cars evolve, the regulations change, the drivers find better ways of doing conditioning themselves/honing their craft etc. So it’s inevitable that records will be broken in given time. What I will say though is this. After reading a comment from Bahamuttiamat (you can find it in the comment section) - I think comparisons can be made as long as they are done in the right way. Instead of debating who is the clear cut, definitive, undisputed GREATEST OF ALL TIME, we should look at Michael’s legacy and how he managed to gain an advantage over his competitors and compare it to the way Lewis does it today purely for discussion purposes. It would be interesting to see how these two heavyweights of the sport achieved greatness in different ways and how the upcoming generation can take inspiration from both. That’s my take anyway. Thanks for watching 😊

  • Hamilton is a very talented driver , but he has only ever won championships driving the best car , when he has had only the second or third best car he has failed , as Eddie Irvine said Schumacher won and challenged for championships in cars that were not the best , its easy for a talented driver to win when he has a car that is over a second quicker than the rest of the grid , yes he has beaten his team mates but like Schumacher Hamilton is on a level above his team mates , Hamilton has not really been challenged in the same way that Schumacher was by another top driver in better machinery , since 2014 the Mercedes has been so dominant that hes never really been challenged at every race by another top driver , the level of drivers has not been the same as say Mika Hakkinen, Vettel has not been able to really get to grips with the cars since 2014 and the only other drivers on the same level as Hamilton , Verstappen and Alonso have had cars that could only win on some tracks and in the case of Alonso were really crap cars that could not even get up to third let alone win a race . For myself Hamilton will only be as good as schumacher when he win at least two championships in a car that is clearly not the best .

    • @nassau bahamas 2001 he had a very good car. Marginally better but there was a difference. Re-watch 2010-2013 and your eyes will really open as to how competitive F1 was. You will see a difference now

      GrubSchumiGrubSchumiमहीने पहले
    • If you watch 2010 to 2013 those seasons were really competitive. Hamilton is quoted as admitting he had the best car to saying others had better cars when it did't go his way. When F1 was actually competitive Hamilton did not win now that it is not He is in the most dominant car he is. Point is he is winning so deal with it.

    • So you don't remember when lewis and alonso were team mates and lewis beat him in his first season at maclaren plus missing out on the championship to kimi in a Ferrari by 1 point, also 2017 and 2018 season ferrari and vettle had arguably the faster car but lewis and Mercedes still beat them, also as great as Michael was it's a known fact that his teamates were not allowed to race him but only offer support and when has any champion won a world championship in a inferior car? People also seem to forget that when lewis joined mercedes there car was very under balanced notorious for chewing up there rear tires and we're basically a low mid field team, we need to give credit were credit is due as they are both fantastic drivers, both achieved so much and put in so much for the sport and will always be remembered for what they achieved..They will be 2 of the most decorated and remembered f1 drivers for some time..

  • This post race intrvw explains why, Lewis loses respect with a lot of fans. The 2011 Italian race was unfair to Schumacher. He had the racing line and is allowed to move over if you have the racing line going into a corner. We've seen Lewis do this numerous times like with Rosberg in 2016. So, there was no need for Lewis to give that sly smirk in the post race interviews which he does so often even today thinking it makes him look 'respectable'. If you believe something say it, otherwise, keep your theatrics to yourself, pls.
