The Formula 1 2021 season is fast approaching and so are it's technical regulation changes, so Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes decided that the Portuguese Grand Prix was the perfect time to test out some of the tech they will be using next year. Using our latest 3D animation of the 3 cars, Jake Boxall-Legge looks into how Mercedes tested a DAS-less W11, how Ferrari tested it's future floor on the SF1000, and how Red Bull is still finding innovative tricks it can pull off on it's RB16

I don't think I will watch the rest of this season F1 may think they are smart but look into the money lost on them other sports this year. If it raises the chance of getting new viewers Liberty Media will keep pushing the teams to pander to leftists for all eternity. It became clear when they banned grid girls and tobacco advertisement that they don't care if the viewer demographic changes as long as there's revenue.

  • So the FIA have cut downforce from an area less effected by the turbulence of following another car? Which reverses the whole point of the new regulations (so drivers are less hampered by following and get a better chance of making a good move to overtake...). Therefore next year's racing will be much much worse than now. Good job! Nice to know you're continuing to think things through...Reverse grid anyone? Or shall we just start with success ballast and stick 100kg on the Mercs at the start to complete the transition to the fake "racing" show (WWF1).

  • I've been thinking about the RB wing holes with the direction of air flow and have come to the conclusion the most important driver is the ground effects pulling air into the holes and out the bottom of the wing/plates. This will decrease the pressure of the centre of the rotation vortices, increasing the angular velocity, generated along the side of the car. Considering that the outside of the cornering car is why the outwash fluid structures are important coupled with the endplate having increased ground effects has pointed me in this direction.

Ever since the mass exodus of THE RACE crew, Autosport has become just another bland, royalty-free upbeat music and voice-over by someone from Fiverr, type of channel. It seems like they're having to run the channel on a very small budget. This video specifically had Jake doing voice-over, thankfully, and he's been at Autosport for a while, but sometimes it's a very loud, older guy, and either he reads the script wrong a lot, or there are a lot of typos in the script. It's sad after how great Autosport was in 2019.

      MichMichमहीने पहले
    • @Laurence Ten Brinke pretty simple - you have redesign almost the whole car. And that means resources. Resources they need for a much more promising opportunity - the new cars and rules in 2022. There is no way Ferrari can catch up Mercedes or Red Bull anyway. And doing what you say would mean they can put less resources on the new car for 2022. What further means they probably will stay behind Mercedes in 2022 because they can do less research and developement on the new car. That would be stupid. 2022 is the big chance for Ferrari. 2020 - they have no chance anyway. And 2021, too, so why waste so much resources on it and corrupt your opportunity for 2022? Ferrari needs to focus on 2022 and the new car. That is the big opportunity. Not wasting time to completely redesign a car that is to far behind their competitors anyway and a dying reglement.

    nothkenothkeमहीने पहले
    • @nothke ... that is literally their one job! lol. And to be fair every change the FIA have brought in to kill performance whether it is aero or engine power have been negated by improved engineering within a couple of years of implementation and usually bring more gains than they lost. The only exception is the stability of aero effect in traffic but that is down to the regulations forcing most of the aero to work from top down, if they increased the level of ground affect aero and/or mechanical grip and reduced the size and complexity of front and rear wings it would likely improve the racing and overtaking without the need for things like DRS. But hey the FIA have always lived inside their own little world and done their own thing without much thought for the long term consequences for the sport or the fans ☺

Cyrus The GreatCyrus The Greatमहीने पहले
    • @Sanat Kapur Yes. However, the packaging of the engine is almost as important as the power of the engine. Remember the MCL33, that chassis was designed with the Honda engine in mind. The RB-Renault were winning races that year. It's a transition period were we can expect that they won't be too or as competitive as this year's championship. Also, the Renault engine isn't too far now from the Mercedes engine. On Bahrain GP, Renault were actually the fastest on speed traps. McLaren is hindered by the token system and that it will be the same chassis for next year. We can expect that the high rake concepts will be more affected by the cutdown of 30% downforce on the floor than the low rake concepts, i.e., Merc and Aston Martin.

    • This is a good read. We shouldn't expect that McLaren will be suddenly competitive just because they will use Mercedes Engine next season. However, I really hope that they'll be able to incorporate the Merc engine, the best way possible and be able to fight for 3rd or 4th realistically or hopefully, for podiums again or better, for wins. www.racefans.net/2020/11/03/no-nasty-surprises-designing-mercedes-installation-for-mclaren-mcl35m-key/

    • @Food McCarthy Since the introduction of the Mercedes inspired nose, they are already working on the 2021's aero. McLaren lost a little bit of pace due to the introduction of the Merc-style nose. However, it seems that they are starting to gain or at least recover the pace upon slowly adding the corresponding parts for the new nose. Also, for the last few races, the other teams on the fight for 3rd are still bringing upgrades, that's why McLaren seemed to have lost some pace.

    • It looks like they’re developing the aero for 2021 and putting it on the car this year, hence their loss of pace this season
