Honda dropped a bombshell when they announced they would be leaving F1 (again) after the 2021 season. With no engine supplier for 2022 what options does Red Bull have and what does this mean for their championship hopes?

  • You'll need permission from FIA to supply to more than three customer teams, so Mercedes is out even if they wanted to. Ferrari will be able to take either RB or AT. Renault only one that can take both. As mentioned in the video, RB or AT do not sign a contract with anyone, Renault would be OBLIGATED to supply it to them as the manufscturer with least customers (per rules).

  • Of course when Horner always puts the blame on the car or the engine for Max’s failures Honda was gonna pull out, no one else also wants to associate with them, I think red bull should just quit f1 or fire max and Horner both

  • Don't forget that RedBull is just a drink maker, they came to Formula1 just to boost the sells of their drinks and products, they haven't a solid historic link with F1 like other teams. For RedBull all depend of marketing, for them it's a normal thing to switch from F1 to another sport like Wrestling...Only money and marketing rule their decisions.

  • Maybe RB may find this an opportune time to leave F1. Surely their ownership would be examining whether they are getting their money's worth out of being there, being at best a second or third place-getter behind Mercedes (of course) with an extra dent in their budget resulting from use of 'customer' Renault power units? They might just pick up their bat and go home!...... Hope not!!!

"Other than some occasional gripes, the performance of the Honda power unit has never been a regular point of contention for Red Bull as it was for Renault in the past." That's news to me. I never knew that Renault (a manufacturer) was using Honda engines. I think Autosport meant to say McLaren.

  • Honda has to be the most schizophrenic engine supplier in F1 history. They're in, then they're out. They're in again, and then they're out again. They have to know that F1 participation, which has led to championships and esteem in racing and the auto world, requires a huge commitment of time and resources. And, yet, they keep coming in, and pulling out. No long-term leadership of vision. This latest shift towards "carbon neutrality" is another short-term fad.

Ayrton Senna was the only full-blooded racing driver of F1 that earned the respect and dedicated co-operation of the Japanese engineers and Honda international.

    • Indy doesn't use a V6 Hybrid power unit, does it? That's probably why. The hybrid unit is an expensive project with no practical purpose outside F1. I think Honda got back in just get the data they wanted and maybe see if they might make it somewhat lucrative. Realized they couldn't, with no real purpose for use of the powerplant outside F1, yea they bailed. Got the data they wanted out of it, for use in other projects.

  • F1 got to expensive. The hybrid engine was a bad idea from the start. So what if a V8 isn't environmentally friendly. F1 was never about saving the planet. So we have a totally predictable outcome to most races as nobody can match Mercedes due to their budget spend. There's something wrong when the pinnacle of Motorsport sends me to sleep most Sunday afternoons.

  • This is what happens and was predicted when F1 made the engines way more complicated than they need to be. Over regulation has stifled the F1 industry, and caused the high costs. The real scientists all know that CO2 does not cause climate change and that it is a scam to swindle the population. Going electric is just an unnecessary complication. If you want more info on climate change look up GWPF here on You Tube. Especially Professor Richard Lindzen 2018 lecture.
