Why Renault's five-year plan in F1 failed

233 824 दृश्य

When Renault returned to F1 as a works team in 2016 it declared it had a five-year plan to become a title contender. 2020 is year five of its comeback, and it’s only just taken its first podium. In this video Edd Straw explains why Renault has struggled to become a frontrunner in F1 again, and the mistakes it made along the way that also set it back
What breakthrough podium really says about Renault

  • Alonslo is being brought in to justify Renault leaving the sport in a few years. They will use the excuse that even the over rated Alonslo could not win, failing to understand that having ALonslo and pandering to his needs will cripple the developement of the car and send Renault plumetting to the back of the field over the next few seasons, before the eventual pull out. The "rebrand" to alpine is all part of Renault distancing themsevles from a failed project.

Then 07 when Fernando move, they could challenge the tittle, even after Fernando move back to Renault it seemed no hope. Is it all about investment in development? Or key person like designer or engineering? Or rule rule made em struggle in those years?

Road Relevance Technologies and Entertainment Racing mix hasn't played well during this era. Formula 1 should focus more on entertainment racing, and make it more European GP1 Series, if the want to minimize the carbon footprint of the logistics. It is just an idea.

  • It seems clear that Renault are gradually improving, and whilst in some respects Fernando might seem to be a good decision, he is now 43 and he will just not be able to compete with the younger men in F1. A harsh reality but Michael Schumacher did the same thing. Fernando will end up being frustrated and angry when he doesn't get the results. I don't know how good he is technically at helping the development of the car, but the video is suggesting that its all about the aerodynamics, and I can't see that Fernando can help with that. I do like the yellow and black though

I honestly wrote the season off after they cancelled in Australia and I've not had a reason to really tune into this year. Maybe things will be back to status quo in winter testing but who knows. Next year is going to be an exciting one (excluding racing), that's for sure.

  • I worked for Renault a couple years back and they had some training about the F1 team you could do and watching the 5 year breakdown was hilarious. They genuinely expected consistent 4th places and potentially podiums. Year 2 was suppose to be consistent podiums. Year 3 was suppose to be consistent wins and potentially a title challenge and year 4 & 5 was supposed to be a serious title challenge or defence. Oh how I laughed

  • Well ,they surely have been improving a lot during the past 5 months but the car is not podium-capable yet. Let's not forget that if it wasn't for Bottas' retirement (and Albon massively underperforming) there would be no podium for Renault. Their pace is still not up to Mercedes' and Red Bull's. The car has yet to break through the top 3 due to raw performance. So I think they have at least 2-3 years ahead of them before they can compete for wins.

Then Honda powered RedBull, Toro Rosso/Alpha Tauri to multiple podiums locking out Renault. Only when Ferrari fell back did they get a rare but immediate opposrtunity for a podium.
