  • Underneath all the 'wingman' jibes, Bottas is actually something very useful to Mercedes: a baseline for where the car is on any given weekend. If they're dominant, he's in play and if they aren't, he's battling over third, fourth or even fifth. As a driver he's about on par with Rosberg, but doesn't have the German passport or talent for larceny that allowed his predecessor to scam undue victories.

  • Valtteri is one of the quickest drivers and a thoroughly nice guy but let's be honest - he is simply not as quick as Lewis Hamilton; qualifying and race results prove that. However, he can on occasion beat Lewis and pushes him all the way every race weekend and that is why he is a perfect team mate for Hamilton and why Mercedes keep renewing his contract. An added bonus for Mercedes is that their two drivers get on so well personally.

  • Ever since he got that seat, people have doubted Bottas - even in 2017 when he was having a bad year - Mercedes tried to hire Verstappen (google it please) and then they tried again in 2019. When Rosberg retired where were all the people jumping at that empty second seat? So many short or one-sided memories among F1 fans I'm afraid. Bottas is a former champion at lower levels just as Hulkenberg / Rosberg /Verstappen / Russell / Ocon and leClerc all were. He regularly beat Massa at Williams but he is simply up against the most gifted driver in F1 and that is why he is judged most harshly - usually by people who want to see Lewis lose. He doesn't have the fighting spirit against his other drivers anymore and that I have no answer for - but when he drove for Williams he would take risks and take on other drivers.

  • Bottas is a beast. He’s doing a fantastic job, it’s not the drivers but the constructors that pay the millions. He is complaint to the rules Toto has set out for him. Their arrangement is elementary - win races if you can but never cost us a race crashing or fighting Lewis aggressively and bring the car back with constructers points. The seat is his to loose if he gets all stupid trying to impress the media and fake critics. He is doing exactly what Toto signed him up to do - simple right.

  • I think it's very short sighted from Mercedes to keep Bottas for 2021. I mean, yes, with this line up they will definitely win both driver's and constructor's championships again (but can they really not win them both with anyone?). But in 2022 there's the regulation change coming and Bottas isn't getting younger (will be 32 on august 2021). You have 2 talented young drivers that are waiting to move to the big team and neither of them will get anything from a 2021 season on their team (Ocon because Renault is very different from Mercedes from chassis to power unit, and Russel because Williams is just so bad). On the other hand, promoting one of them to the big team before the regulation change would get them to learn about the car and have an input on the new design (which would help the 2022 season A LOT). Do they really need Bottas to win the 2021 constructor's championship? I don't think so. Will Bottas be the driver to push them into greatness in the new regulation period? Doubtful. It feels like Mercedes doesn't know what to do with their young drivers... or maybe they don't trust them

    Damien PDamien Pमहीने पहले
  • Here’s the final answer to this question, so there won’t be any need to ask again...Bottas is a great driver, with nerves of steel and a solid mental structure and self-image. If there was not a Lewis right now, 1st and 2nd each week would be Bottas and Verstappen, over and over again, sometimes swapping spots. Plus, while the video noted Valtteri is up against one of the greatest drivers of all time, it failed to mention how well Valtteri handles it. He is not short-circuiting from fear, or mind-screwing himself, like Christian Horner said Gasly was doing when teamed up with Verstappen. You don’t see any cracks in his thinking or confidence, nor any animosity towards Lewis, he is calm, cool, and is a positive member of the Mercedes team. Put other current drivers in his spot and we’d see all kinds of bitching and moaning about the pressure of being teamed with Lewis. Disappointments and excuses. No, Valtteri is doing exactly what Lewis and Toto need him to be doing. If he wasn’t, he wouldn’t be there. Neither of them would bat an eye pulling him out if he wasn’t what they needed; their commitment to winning is absolute. Valtteri drives for first in quali and first in the race. He will overtake Lewis if he can, and strive for first, without smashing his car into the rear-end of his teammate, like we seen some other teams do recently, hmm. Next time you see Valtteri, you give him a little salute; he is a top class f1 driver and a solid dude.

  • The point scoring percentage comparison isn't quite fair between seasons - second place now scores 18 vs 25 in first (so the runner up gets 72% of the winner's point score), whereas in Barrichello's day it was 8 vs 20 (so the runner up gets 80% of the winner's point score).

  • VB77 is a fast F1 driver! He pushes LH44! However, if Valterri had the same mentality as Nico, he would be closer in the championship race. I live him. I'm cheering for him! There's too much of the same tire strategy with the two Mercedes. I really like that in Sochi he was on mediums with Hamilton on softs at race start. Let Lewis pit first, then pit after him. If Valterri doesn't put his elbows out for the remainder of the season and be a serious challenger for the driver's championship, I would be very disappointed! 🏁

Don't discount him for the world championship. He is fed up and motivated. I am a Hamilton fan and fuck he makes me worry about the weekend quite a lot, simply because Hamilton needs to be absolutely perfect to come out ahead. And while he can do that consistently, it only needs one slip up for Valterri to take advantage.

  • I like VB a lot an d I found this video very interesting. It seems an odd thing to say for someone who is racing in F1 but he lacks a combination of race craft and that calculated risk taking that means it takes him a couple of laps longer to get passed someone when the other racers would manufacture the conditions to make the pass. VB almost waits for his opportunity whereas someone like Max gets his elbows out and says I'm coming through. Too many times VB has finished behind Max when LH has beaten him by a few seconds

  • I feel that Bottas' biggest problem is the team. F1 is a the biggest PR machine outside of politics. And what's better PR for Mercedes than Hamilton claiming all the biggest F1 records in one of their cars? I'm not suggesting for a moment that Mercedes is working against Bottas, but that perhaps they're not always going to give him the best chances. Mugello is a prime example, other races this season Hamilton has been able to drive the strategy, here Bottas tries to and the team don't give him it.

  • As always good analysis. I think people underrate Lewis. He pulls out some amazingly consistent dives and is on another level so it is hard to beat him when he is really on point. It also underscores how good Niko Rosberg (another guy who does not get much credit) was and how special his championship season was to beat Hamilton over that year after being criticized too prior to his win. Bottas is a superb driver. Just like Nico, he has to find a different perspective / approach to help pull out a year that will better challenge Lewis. Even then he may still lose given chance and Hamilton’s consistency and current form-but at least it would be a better race for us fans.

  • Its great that you sat down and worked out points percentages, but these figures don't take into account all variables. Putting aside crashes and mechanical failures, you fail that mention that When Rubens was teammate to Michael, Rubens was the number 2 driver, often having to play the fall guy in strategy so Michael could win or even having to let Michael past. The same can be said with Mark and Seb, there was a clear No1 and No2 driver line-up, so all this effects the point scoring. When it comes to Mercedes they only play the 1-2 card when it comes down to tyres or saving engines, or when it has become clear that one driver can't win but it is still in the running with another team, this is why Nico was able to win. Rubens and Mark was never allowed to win.

  • Like your reviews and points of view! It is obvious that Bottas is an exceptional driver,, Mercedes would not be investing in him, if he was not!! To be second to Lewis is no mean feat! However,, people love to find something to criticise and pull down,, and for the major part,, they are people who do not have the minimum knowledge of what they are talking about! Watch a race and feel that they are experts on the subject! Unfortunately, one of the all so common problems, of internet!

  • The Barrichello / Webber / Bottas points share comparison doesn't take into account that Barrichello and Webber were subject to team orders. Barrichello raced during the high watermark of team orders, leading to team orders being banned for a while. Although Webber raced when team orders were banned, in reality Red Bull - like Ferrari - have long had a policy of favouring their lead driver, unlike Mercedes which tries to create a level playing field. For completeness, although Mercedes have a policy of getting behind whichever driver is leading the championship in a tight season, if the other driver is no longer realistically challenging for the title, this approach benefits either driver. This raises a question: how many world championships has each of Hamilton and Schmacher won by having to beat his team mate in a fair fight? Answer: 6 and 0.
