What's really going on with Perez vs Russell at Williams for F1 2021

256 635 दृश्य

The 2021 F1 driver market is so volatile that even a contract for next year doesn't mean a driver is safe. Williams confirmed both George Russell and Nicholas Latifi were staying on for another season back in July, but since then the team has new owners. Rumours have gathered pace that Sergio Perez could join Williams for next year, and the story developed several times over the Portuguese GP weekend. In this video Edd Straw details everything we know about the story... so far...

  • Well, in case Perez doesn't get a seat in RB, then the solution is quite obvious! Keep Russell and kick out daddy's boy, I am sure Perez's pace and financial backing would be able to replace Latifi's big pocket!

  • The main problem with F1 is that the teams have to find sponsors individually. There needs to be sponsors strictly for F1 as a whole that appear on every car. Then there could be more equal money sharing. The higher team finishes get a bonus depending on the finish. That would solve all these drivers getting race seats because of money or their father owning the team!

  • Yet again. If Williams let's Russell, the guy who managed to convince almost every F1 fan out there that Williams could grab that 1 point for the standings, go in favor of a driver with money, the last thing Williams needs to worry about is getting that point, because their death by the fans hands would be miserable, and I think the new owners wouldn't like that very much. But then again, I'm not one of the owners, so who am I say what they like and don't like, right? Regardless of the outcome, Russell already showed everyone he can drive. If he can drive a brick and finish 11th, I'm sure he can drive an actual F1 car into the points.

  • There's a certain romanticism of an English driver in an English team (or an Italian driver driving for Ferrari), and while Williams is now owned by a US company, the team is still based in England, and I'd love to see Russell stay at Williams for that reason. I'd also like to see a much better Russell joining a much better McLaren outfit in the coming years. The duo could be highly marketable, too.

  • If I were in charge, I wouldn't focus on replacing the drivers, I'd focus on making the car faster. No amount of talent is going to extract much of anything good from that car the way they are at the moment. It would simply mean they race each other harder and potentially collide a good few times. I do like the thought of Russell as Verstappen's teammate though.

    RonnieRonnieमहीने पहले
  • It would be a great oppertunity for Russel and Red Bull to have Russel in that 2nd Red Bull seat. Particularly with the eye on the future for Red Bull. And perhaps with the early momentum Verstappen would simply secure a good season by being favoured and not too much could go wrong. But honestly, this is quite a dangerous deal for both drivers. Max doesn't really want a driver next to him that could easily put it inside the 2 tenth Verstappens laptimes. This would make Verstappen look a lot less dominant. And you know, there are those that would rate Russel over Verstappen. If Russel actually beats Verstappens (lol) this would simply cost Verstappen his ticket to Mercedes when compared to Russel, a guy that will *still* have ties to Mercedes. At the same time, Russel doesn't want to be put on 3-5 tenths all season long. Or just in general, even he would only be narrowly beaten by Verstappen this would still do more harm to Russels reputation than it would do any good. Surely it would be a succesful season for any 2nd Red Bull driver if they could even challenge Verstappen in quali and the race. But for Russel being beaten by Verstappen even if it is a first year is nothing to brag about. This guy is in the Verstappen, LeClerc catagory. Hes even the youngest but just 6 months so that doesn't mean crap. :) Vettel is several years younger than Hamilton. In theory Vettel could still win 3 titles easily in a good car. But that's not gonna happen. I wonder how Verstappen *really* feels about this move. He says he doesn't care who is next to him and I believe him. And I personally think he would make Russel look like a Daniel Ricciardo. Especially in their first year. Verstappen might even relish the challenge because this battle would also be a battle for that Mercedes seat. And once again, a first year would be heavily in favour of Verstappen anyway. Even if Hamilton or LeClerc would join Verstappen for a year in Red Bull, he would very likely beat them purely on being so comfortable in his team and getting a good head start. And perhaps because he is just better. :)

  • Even if Russell becomes a test driver next season, he's good enough and young enough to come back to the grid competitively. I wanted Albon to succeed in Red bull but his performances this season are below expectation when compared to his results last year. Personally, I think RB getting Perez would be a great move for team results because in that way they would have 2 alfa drivers again, since Riccardo. I imagine Vettel's salary at RP requires them to keep Latifi and his financial contribution. At the end of the day, Hulkenberg is on trouble.

What rp have done is take away there main driver who the could rely on to put the car where it should be and replace him with s failing driver who is just as unpredictable as Lance . Hope Russel doesn't loose his seat . If he does he wants to go knocking on redbull door and forget about Merc as it seems been an Merc young driver to it destined to fail and left with out hope . Just hope Russel doesn't go same route as Pascal wherlien went . Mercedes needs to look at it's self and ask why none of there young drivers ain't making it in the sport when it's clear the have the talent and skill

  • Interesting. It doesn’t matter if Williams got Lewis or Michael in those wheelbarrows for 2021 they need to go and buy new cars. That Williams chassis they agreed to keep as part of the sell was a big oversight on the new owners. Apparently having a drivers contract nowadays in F1 doesn’t mean anything anymore.

Too many good and even great drivers, not enough seats and teams in the sport for them all. I wish I could say I saw that getting better soon.. but with the pandemic and consequent economic depression on top of the other disincentives and fading public interest in the sport .. _(Thank effing you Pay TV paywalls & lack of official free livestreams!)_ I fear its not looking good. F1 is going to be in very serious trouble if it loses any more teams and in a bit of trouble if it doesn't gain any news ones as well.

  • I can't believe Red Bull have not jumped at Perez tbo. His performance over the years in various cars is astonishing. He is exactly what they have said they needed for years. A driver that can extrapolate everything from the car and give them results. His record speaks for itself in that regard. He is undoubtedly one of the most underated gents on the grid not to mention his role in saving Force India. Red Bull needs to wake up, face the fact that their junior program is washed up atm and grab either perez or russell. They keep saying they need results and they are not getting them (from their second driver). Meanwhile Russell and Perez are driving like absolute chads. I really don't get it. I mean this last race with Albon saying "why do they race me so hard" was the nail in the coffin for me. He's a super nice guy but if i ran Red Bull....no, that is not the fighting spirit i would demand.

But I'm almost sure he isn't good enough for that Red Bull. That said, maybe Red Bull can have him, Hulkenberg, and Russell in a private test or something and do a shootout ! That would be cool.

    • @Ajunta :D I have to say i was not a big fan of perez when he came on the scene as he was pretty much a paid driver. that said what he did at sauber changed my mind. Ocon didn't beat him and there is a good reason why he got the boot. Hulkenberg didn't beat him either (talking end of day results). That said I have always said Hulkenberg is and has been the most underrated driver in a long long time. I was a big fan of his before he hit F1. He crushed it. Sadly he never got the drive and never had that "amazing drive" in F1. Cheko is known as the guy that brings the points home and for good reason. 3 podiums with Sauber and 5 podiums with Force India who else on the grid can say they have had that many amazing drives (they were all well deserved and well celebrated)? This last race wrecked out on lap one t3/4 had to limp it to the pits came back to finish 7th. The guy has time and time again delivered results in cars that shouldn't be there that's all im saying :D he has earned it. Russel has too though idk is' he that good or is his team mate that bad? I think he's that good. It would be a hard call. If i were red bull i would roll the dice and go with cheko simply for his consistent performance and proven ability to adapt to, lets be honest, not great cars in the past. The ability to push the whole race in a car that shouldn't be at the top and somehow he gets it there. That's what RB has in max and albon isn't cutting it. I love albon but when he said "why do they race me so hard"....oh man if i was his boss i would tell him i never want to hear those words come out of his mouth ever again. :D

      T2020T2020महीने पहले
    • Albon has fighting spirit if nothing else. He's done slightly better at Red Bull than Gasly. That said, they do need something more. As for Perez, he's good with the tires which is incredibly important in this Pirelli era, and he's pretty darn good in wheel to wheel (if a little desperate at times), but he was slower than both Hulkenberg and Ocon when they were his teammates. At the moment he is driving a very, very good car with a teammate that just makes him look good. Above average, but would be made to look silly and slow next to Max. Russell is an interesting prospect and if I were Red Bull I would go for him.

  • All this talk of Russell's seat 'is at risk' is ridiculous for many reasons. - Perez brings skill and money, and that's true, but Williams don't need money anymore. Pundits are all over this detail of driver funding, but are bypassing the fact that Williams have new, rich owners. These new owners have very deep pockets and don't need dimes from drivers (even at single Million$), and their focus is obviously very long term. - Russell fits the bill for Williams for now, to get through 2021. Either way, without a doubt, whether he drives in 2021 or not, Russell will be driving a Mercedes in 2022. - Perez would only go for Williams if he got a minimum of a 3 year locked in deal, with an expensive contract cancel clause. I wouldn't negotiate for less if I was him. Theres no point in Perez fumbling in virtually the same Williams 2020 car in 2021, and be there just for one year in the new car in 2022, without yet another year to get the car figured out, with a potential for winning. He is the kind of quality driver that will be able to tune the new car, and Williams needs that. - It makes far more sense to replace Latifi with Perez, as Latifi lags behind Russel, and again ... Williams dont need the driver money. Let Hass take Latifi. Then when Russell leaves in 2022, Williams can look at the market to put even more experience in the second seat. I highly doubt the past Williams mantra of having one new hotshot kid driver, will be a part of their mid term plans. They need experienced, engineering focussed drivers in both seats in 2022 and onward for a couple years. Hulk? Bottas? K-Mag? Torpedo-G, maybe Kimi might stick around and give it a try.

    David JohnsonDavid Johnsonमहीने पहले

The hype around him reminds of what was there around Max Verstappen a few years ago, and while money is a harsh reality of the sport, all that money in the sport is pointless if it comes at the cost of great drivers like Russell who are the sort of drivers the sport actually exists for. I really hope he doesn't lose his seat, but even if he does, I hope Mercedes is able to secure him a future and help him the way they did Ocon.
