Two guests for you this week, as Patrick van Straaten welcomes Dave Jackson and Dougie Critchley to the show, to discuss Mesut Özil's impending departure from Arsenal, and the Italian title race plus Moussa Dembele's move to Atletico Madrid respectively. Dave and Patrick talk over what Özil's signing meant to Arsenal, the myth and reality of his performances at the club, how fans fell out of love with him, and our issues with Mikel Arteta's treatment of him. Then Dougie and Patrick chew over Milan-Juventus and Roma-Inter for clues to the destination of this season's Scudetto, have a chat about Antonio Conte's weirdly attacking tactics so far, and finish up with an analysis of what Moussa Dembele will bring to Atleti and the transfer's effects on the Spanish and French title races.

    • It's not b.s it has been widely reported. It's all political. Politics don't belong in football. But paying someone over 300 a week to not play them over it, is pathetic by arsenal. Been rinsed by players that don't even play

Juve have played quite bad against an AC Milan squad decimated by injuries, and played terribly against a 10-men Sassuolo, so there is literally no sign of a good game plan by Pirlo. Pat also said that hes afraid if a big player gest injured for Milan they will hault; does he know that Zlatan has been on the sidelines with injury for more than a month and they are still top of the league??

His inability to tactically adapt and learn modern pressing systems were his biggest failure. He put his money and ego before the team these past few years imho.

  • This is legitimately the only Premier League channel (mostly premier league at least) that respects other leagues. It’s really a beautiful thing to see. People call Serie A and Bundesliga “farmers leagues”, but in actuality, Serie A has passed La Liga into second, and Bundesliga is right there with La Liga because of the decline of league depth (and the decline of Barca and Madrid). Also, pertaining to Juventus, they are in a process that they coined reJuvenation. They obviously want to win the treble as they do every year, but they are prioritizing youth for the first time since the mid 90s (which led to a champions league win and the best squad on paper in Europe until the Galacticos). Chiesa, rovella, McKennie, Arthur, Reynolds, Pellegrini, frabotta, de Ligt, Bentancur, etc. they are also going to go all in for zaniolo Donnarumma and Locatelli once the money comes back into the sport. If they can pull these signings off, they will be the best team in Europe for a decade. Pertaining to Inter, they aren’t scoring a lot of goals because of flukes or counter-attacking. Conte knows he needs to go all in for the league since he failed in Europe, so they are playing extremely aggressive and trying to put games away to avoid the classic Serie A bottom table clubs that just sit back all game. Lastly, Roma do have a lot of flops and old players, but Fonseca has a great philosophy and is just using these players as he builds the midfield and defense. They are building the best and youngest defense other than Smalling (who is really just a fill in for a few seasons as they keep building primavera talent). They have some of the best primavera players in Europe ( calafiori, riccardi, bouah, etc). Also they don’t even have their best player right not (zaniolo)

    Football CalcioFootball Calcioमहीने पहले

  • I think Arsenal definitely deserve a portion of the blame but the idea that özil can be entirely blameless in this is not fair nor accurate. His form post new contract was poor, he seemed to be resting on his laurels and clearly all the managers post this contract struggled to find space for him tactically. A great player and a player with desire would have pushed and developed his game to ensure his place in the team, particularly when this is supposed to be your best player and highest earner. Özil seemed happy to take his play cheque, play his game and shrug when he wasn't picked. That's not elite mentality and not what you should expect from your supposed best player. No question he has been a good player for us, his signing was huge and Arsenal also made this situation worse, but Özil is categorically not blameless.

    • @Josh that's the problem with you Ozil groupies, there is no comparison between the two (Ozil and Modric) and the fact that you think there is reflects an overall lack of knowledge of Ozils time at Arsenal. You seem to think that just because his name is Ozil, he ran the show when in fact that couldn't be any further from the truth. You could apply the same argument you've used for Ozil, to almost any other player that played before the most recent cup win, but he's the celebrity name so that makes him a legend. • The problem is France at the moment comes down to the fact Ligue 1 signed a new rights deal last year with a broadcaster that can't now make the payments it promised, and has now fallen through leaving Ligue 1 to sign a significantly worse deal back with Canal+. This has now left clubs scrambling for cash that they had budgeted for with that lucrative Tv deal Ligue 1 had signed last year, in already hard times with no gate revenue as well, this means you're likely to see french clubs selling on the cheap to gain some quick cash.

  • From a juve fan, it was a difficult start but not something which we aren’t used to taking the 15/16 into consideration where juve made a large comeback to clinch the title. Juve needed time under a new coach who’s also inexperienced and also a very inexperienced squad with players like chiesa kulusevski mckennie all part of the main 15juve starters never being at a club like juve and playing to win a title and competing in europe. Also danilo has become a new player under pirlo. Pirlo is a fantastic coach and i see him there for the next 4-6 years regardless of winning the title or not.

  • I wouldn't call Ozil a failure, however he wasn't exactly a rounding success either. He was good in his early years and definitely peaked in 15/16 when he had that excellent season where he almost broke the assist record, but since then its been pretty much downhill. If anything he's a victim of the changes in football in the last few years where the sole No 10 player has been phased out and everyone now plays high press with 8/10 hybrids. Overall I'd give him a 6/10 signing.

So for me, 6 is enough; good but not great.

      Therealgaz619Therealgaz619महीने पहले
    • @Bj Disagree. Anything above a 6 suggests that he was consistently putting in good performances, which I think we can all agree that he didn't. Post 15/16, I can count on one hand the amount of games where he was excellent and for a player of his talent, that is nowhere near good enough. Not to mention his nonexistence in the big away games.

  • I’m an arsenal fan and in my opinion mesut ozils arsenal career was a massive massive flop. The guy had one world class season in 15/16 season with the assist record and the goals and where arsenal finished (2nd) we should have won the league that year. Apart from that he has been a flop signing. Fair enough the club didn’t sign benzema that year and we would of actually win the league, that I will defend ozil on because he had useless giroud in front of him. But the reputation he had coming from Real Madrid for 42 million got fans so excited and saying we are going to compete again. Nah we didn’t, barely competed. Ever wonder why Real Madrid let him go so easily and carelessly? Mesut ozil was a waste of money and now for the past 2 and a half years has been using arsenal as a cash grab for his salary which is 350k a week!! It’s about time he left now. Not good enough for the club. Good luck to you in turkey but I don’t respect you as a footballer I’m afraid. 3/10 for his career. Love the content 👍

Juve have that ability to grind out results even when not playing necessarily well, unlike the other teams in the title mix, and that's why they always have to be in the conversation, no matter how far they are from the top, until it is mathematically impossible

    • @Ismael K The problem with Ozil is, even in his prime, he was never a player you can build a team around. He was a player who makes a few nice touches but he's not going to change the direction of a game. In fact, you won't even know he's on the pitch if it's going against us. These are accusations that you could never level at a Sanchez or a Fabregas. The fact that people accuse Arsenal of not putting the pieces around him misses the point. Ozil is the piece you put around a player who's better than him. Look at where and how he's had success. Always paired with a better player. He doesn't have the game or the personality to be the man. The fact that Arsenal expected him to be the man was a miscalculation. The fans thought they were getting the man, but what they got was a sublime talent that flutters around the periphery when u need him to make a difference. Add Ozil's attitude into the mix with his pay packet and you have a pretty toxic cocktail IMHO. It would have helped if he didn't decide to wage war with the Club on social media too.

    • @Ad Tastic it's a bit a both Before he declined we definitely failed him and Alexis The 15/16 season He was playing amazing with giroud Campbell and wallcot up front (sanchez was injured for like half a season) Had we just got a proper striker that year we would have won the league But after 2018 yeah he declined really But we were not contending anymore The years where we were "pretenders" we failed him

    • The guy hands in a sick note every away day up North, and we failed him? Ozil hasn't been interested since day 1.

  • Ozil's time has nowhere been a failure at arsenal fine he didn't win the league with them but atleast he did win some trophies with them but the way he's leaving is as bad as it goes just because he had a opinion on uighur Muslims been tortured in china👀

  • No surprise to see the resentment toward Ozil when you consider the disgraceful sentiment toward Arsene Wenger at the end of his tenure. Horrible behavior by some outspoken followers of football.

  • I think it would be too harsh to call him a failure. He still got like 18 assists in 1 season was it? And when he came in before lockdown he'd played well. Not his fault he didn't get picked in the squad.
