What a week for Barcelona. In the space of a few days, Samuel Umtiti tested positive for Covid, they lost 8-2 to Bayern in the Champions League, Setien was sacked, Koeman targeted, ter Stegen ruled out until November following knee surgery, Messi said he wanted to leave, and Arthur was caught drunk-driving. On today's podcast, Patrick, Joe, and Michael McCubbin discuss Friday's game, the managerial landscape, and the mess which is the squad. Then we disagree about selling Messi.

    • My theory is that Koeman wasn't hired to appease Messi (their case for him at this point is all the years they've spent together) but to appease De Jong, who 1. They paid a lot of money for (in a competitive bid) 2. They've played out of position 3. Has an agent who won't be afraid to shop him around down the line

  • Joe is wrong here. They should have sold Messi, even if just for £70m. You don't have to replace him this year. Solidify the rest of that team and just set up for a top 4 finish. Bring in 3-4 young guys. Ihatteran is a great shout by Pat. Go get Thiago Almeda out of Valez, or Verschaeren out of Anderlecht. They have to get an attacking mid for the future. They need to plan a 2-3yr rebuild around a new manager, Xavi I guess, and buy young guys who will hit that 20-23 age when Xavi is in his 3rd year.

  • It was fun for a while, I always like to know external points to what happens in m club Barça. But there are 2 huge mistakes I've seen so far, Pochettino would never be welcome here, sure his name has been thrown around, but he has disrespected the club in several ocasions, he is very identified with Espanyol our local rival, so yeah, he has no place here. Also Messi is Barça, no true culé would agree that letting him leave is the best option. Besides, how much money are we going t get? 100 millions? Sure, maybe Borussia, Sevilla or Oporto can make great signings with that money, but we have wasted over that on players like Dembele, Coutinho, Griezmann..... so no way, we can't lose Messi. The only reasonable thing to argue is that he will leave for free next year, so its best to get some money. Clearly he won't do that, that will harm a bit his reputation, let alone the fact that the current board will be already gone by next june when he has that option. Messi will retire here. 100%

  • 38:30 On the argument that selling Messi is the shortest path to another Champions League trophy, is it not that kind of short term thinking that's only worsened Barcelona's situation, if not created it? The whole Pjanic for Arthur deal is a pretty good example, albeit that's just to balance the books. The lack of direction with the appointment of sporting directors? Yes it's the shortest route to European glory, but that's obviously not gonna solve everything, much less provide enough finances to the club to sign players they need. I'd have to agree with Joe that it should be recognised that La Liga is out of the question, given how poor Barca have been and how Madrid haven't, and that the priority is top 4. Selling Messi would almost get rid of any chance at that.

    Lucas EricsonLucas Ericson6 महीने पहले
  • Joe is kinda right. There are two options, 1. Messi gets sold , the board has to immediately resign after days of protests of loyal cules in barcelona. Barcelona will be no different than Valencia then. Bartomeu and his colleague will be targeted continuously for destroying Barcelona as a club. 2.Messi stays under Koeman, Koeman re structures the team little bit and bring the best out of the world class players we already have , we may try for ucl , A la liga at best. By March next year, the current board will be replaced and can be considered redeemed after the colossal mismanagement over the last 5 years and also by not selling Messi. The new board will bring forward their new sporting project. Messi signs a new contract and stays. Koeman may get another year or two at max and then Xavi will be ready to join in. Heres the thing, There are some deadweight around the first team, they will be pushed aside with younger players , Coutinho or Griezmann and new signings . That is a good enough team to challenge ucl if managed properly. if managed properly.

  • Uhhh, the whole La Masia thing. Lets just make a supposed starting XI for La Masia players with my limited knowledge and trusting of google if they didn't sell anyone GK: Onana RB: Hector Bellerin CB: Pique CB: Eric Garcia LB: Sergi Roberto CM: Grimaldo CM: Thiago CM: Rafinha RM: Adama Traore LM: Ansu Fati St: Lionel Messi Pedro, Batra, Puigi, Alena, Balde on the bench. I am not sure if this La Liga winning material alone, but on paper this is quite amazing and balance. And a few world class signings, like a more experienced winger, a proper ST, a world class CB and perhaps an "all action midifielder" would had take this team to the very top. The problem is the are wasting money signing experienced players to be bit part players. Rakitic, Vidal, even Griezmann, they are good players, but the role they want them to fill could had been filled by players that they trained themselves.

  • If De Jong is not a failure, then Lenglet shouldn't be one; success or not they are the right players. Lenglet had one bad game where the entire team was overrun; is not normal for CB to be chasing runners after runner in the box because the the midfield was a giant chasm. It doesn't help that Pique has never been a backfoot defender, he excels in cleaning up loose balls, passing and be calm on the ball, be he has always been defensively suspect when under pressure. Same could be said of Jordi Alba. Barcelona haven't really won anything in Europe for a while because once teams are talented enough to apply pressure, they will crack. Pato is right in Barca need a Partey kind of character. They need destructive players that isn't necessarily skilled, but definitely have a physical presence. One thing I noticed is that this team is actually quite slow. Up front is fine, but the midfield was completely overrun and you feel they just couldn't keep up. I feel Joe needs to control himself when he rants. He is awesome normally, but the rants sometimes just lose the facts a bit.

We bought a bunch of forwards and didn’t stay with the recipe for success. Anyone who’s been watching Barcelona for the past decade knows this was coming a few years back. • You have to be crazy to sell messi when you know things will change for sure. The board is out. You have capable support. You have dembele depending on if he is well again. You have trincao who is a phenomenal talent. You have puig who has shown this season that he is capable of adding energy and life to the team. You have de jong who if played in his right position is phenomenal. So talking about messi going now is absolutely hasty and stupid because you can go to another team and everything dont work for you. So I totally disagree with the idea of messi should leave .

It seems as if Messi with his opinions is one reason why the club's development has been on halt for several seasons and the situation is as bad as possible. No player should be a Messiah. And the majority of topsides work very well without Messi. Bayern and Liverpool being two of those clubs, so I don't understand what is the fuss about this ageing player on decline

  • the problem is that those players don't want to leave. The wage structure there is terrible - Messi earns around 3 or 4 times the ammount that KDB earns and at the same time Barcelona pays their youth players bigger wages, than Real Madrid pays to Ferland Mendy or Fede Valverde. IMO Messi has to go, not because of wages, but because Barcelona has to learn to work without Messi (sort of like Madrid did with Ronaldo) - he is 33 now, he is going to decline more and more and as long as he is there it'll be expected to build the team around him. He does most of their ball progression in their hard games and is himself responsible for most of their goals, bottom line is - Barcelona won't move on with Messi at the club

  • Barca should imo keep the young players and push on who they can. Find a manager who doesn’t have this romantic connection to the club and will just rebuild. Screw tradition, Barca are a mess. They need a manager who will bring through the youth candidates, get the most out the older players who they can’t sell this summer (I’d guess Busquets, Pique and Messi) and someone who can get Barcelona playing as a team again. Not this “rely on Messi to perform a miracle”. Bring Cucurella or Miranda back to rotate with Firpo, drop Alba. Maybe next summer if they can afford bring back Grimaldo (who they should never have let go of). Find a new RB, either partner Lenglet with Todibo or find another CB (Araujo maybe). I think loan options will be a good stop gap for next season. Bring in some younger players, see how they perform before signing on permanent deals. Personally I think they should sell Dembele. His contract expires in 2022, doubt Barca will renew given how injury prone he has become and find a buyer

  • I agree with Patrick, I think Barcelona in its whole will play better without Messi. Neymar didn't really make it with Barca, why? Because he couldn't handel with the fact that only Messi can be the real star of Barcelona. He also wanted to be a star and that isn't possible if Messi plays in your team. Ousmane Dembélé, he couldn't handel the pressure of playing together with Messi because Messi is 'god' for Barca fans (I know, not all of them!). Griezmann, Messi doesn't like him and he is not played in his favored position. If Messi stays with Barca, Griezmann HAS to leave. I really think Messi should leave Barca, Barca should cash in instead of losing him for free next season. €100-150 million and a lot of salary out of the books. It's the end of an era for Messi at Barca.

As big as playing for Barcelona would be I also think that anyone would love to play alongside Messi. If he was sold this summer, that would only lower Barcelona's reputation even further. • Here's what i do if i'm Koeman: Front 3: Messi plays centrally as a false 9 or dedicated 10, whatever you want to call it. 2 forwards play in front of him to his right and left. i would play Coutinho as the wide left forward and Griezmann wide right. probably Fati or a youth player or a new transfer soak up most the minutes off the bench (assuming Suarez is gone) Coutinho needs to show he can press because both forwards flanking Messi must press much more actively. Griezmann is definitely up for this unless he has just given up on his whole fucking career. Messi can cover space in front of central defenders that is often left unoccupied for someone to drop into. having him there will be enough to impact the space if Barcelona manage to keep compact and press intelligently with the players around Messi. ideally he jogs in the middle and is a good passing option after the ball is won back for most of the time Barcelona don't have the ball. Midfield 4: I'd utilize wide talent and cut the fat in midfield. Marc Cucurella starts on the left flank and i will stick with Sergi Roberto or Semedo on the right side. Jordi Alba likely has some more years in him and Junior Firpo can provide depth if not. given that Koeman wants Donny van de Beek and both Ajax and Suarez are interested in reuniting there is something that can be done there i would hope after some transfer business is done. if not, Pjanic will have to be partnered with De Jong centrally. i agree with Joe Thomlison, players like Vidal are finished and a strong midfielder is extremely vital. Coutinho is not a player i could see in this style of midfield, but who knows it might be possible if he adapts or against specific opposition. Back 3: ideally this will be all ball playing central defenders for this system, but Lenglet is probably the only elite defender they have. i could consider playing Sergio Busquets centrally on occasion, but Jean-Claire Todibo needs to up his game and get a lot of minutes next year. i would put him in the center of the back line unless Thiago SIlva could be signed on a free transfer, he is 35 but a lot goddamn better than fucking Pique or Umtiti could be right now. this back 3 needs to be compact to the midfield and become smart with the offside trap. there is simply no central defender physically capable of consistently running down balls in behind unless the offside trap is strong enough to prevent wingers at very high pace, which it can be if they remain compact. i want about 10-15 meters in between the lines or we're fucked. and of course Andre ter Stegen starts, he is not only an excellent keeper but the exact style necessary as he is very comfortable on the ball. So in possession we need to utilize the technical ability of the midfield as well as the defense in order to have smooth prolonged build ups to the attack. width is key and i'd like to start Marc Cucurella and Sergi Roberto for this reason. Cucurella can drift wide and play can usually be built up on the right with Sergi hugging the touchline, often with his back to the crowd for one-two exchanges with a forward or a midfielder to move the ball up. Sergio Busquets could very well be a central defensive option if the team shows it is capable of dominating possession of the ball. Messi will often drop into midfield, maybe between Donny and Frenkie or sometimes deeper, and advance forward after progressing the ball with a forward thinking pass out wide to Cucurella or a forward. i would expect a combination of Donny, Frenkie, and Messi to cut through a vast majority of La Liga midfields, probably most Champions League teams until the quarter final or so as well honestly. after the ball is brought into the final third i want Barcelona to act like fucking Barce players and let that be a normal place for you to have the ball for extended periods of time. ideally, Cucurella and Roberto (or a winger like Fati) are maintaining the width, the back line are supporting the attack from deep ( probably 15-25 yards from halfway line) like holding midfielders would for a lesser side. i would want Frenkie de Jong to float well outside of the box and let Messi and Donny operate in and outside of the area between Frenkie and the two forwards that would be looking for an opportunity to shoot, link up, dribble, be creative. I feel like this is probably enough to get second or third in La Liga, maybe win el Copa del Rey but probably not gonna overtake Madrid without much more serious squad overhaul and no, definitely no fucking Champions League unless Ansu Fati grows very faster than expected or Ousmane can be fit enough. genuinely though, i don't have a position for Ousmane in this system. not defensive enough for the wings, not physical enough for the front line ahead of Messi. i don't think Coutinho works for that front line well either, but he is quality enough to do something positive and he does have the legs to at least cover space while Griezmann presses, but Griezmann could very well fall off the face of the earth in terms of performances. the strength in this system is it is built for Messi and the midfield to be very creative and if they are goddamn compact enough maybe they will be functional pressing unit as well, but maybe i'm wrong.

  • As a Barca fan I was clapping when Coutinho scores those goals!! I knew that such a result was going to come tbh!! I hope that this ramps up the SERIOUS STRUCTURAL CHANGES that are needed!! I just hope that they just change the entire squad!! Because these players are not hungry anymore!! They are just dead and cannot!!

  • Around the 18 minute mark Joe absolutely rips into the transfers. As a life long Barca fan, I don’t think that signings such as Dembele were failures at all, but I think the issue is there was absolutely no planning for integrating them into a progressive system. The board just seemed to want to play like the 2009 Pep campaign with whatever expensive players they could get their hands on

  • I still think coutinho is a left sided central midfielder rather that a left winger and he'd do well for barca in that role

  • About the la masia fallen off a cliff thing, our academy has produced players like onana, icardi,Thiago,Eric Garcia,Grimaldo, puig,Fati, moriba, cucu, mateu, miranda, jandro,Monchu, kubo, alena,Sergio Gomez, collado, araujo etc in recent years. Before making outrageous claims like that please do a bit of research about why there aren’t more youth team players in the squad,it’s because the managers and the board are not giving them chances and our best talents end up leaving or never make it off the bench.

  • I think Koeman is the right choice... Yes he starts with building a strong defense but which team doesn't want that. But his midfield and attackers are always great. Pele and depay for example. Look at the Netherlands, Southampton, Feyenoord, psv, Ajax and Valencia. PLUS Koeman isnt afraid to change teams radically, is good in saying goodbye to important older players and build a strong team in short times. Look forward to seeing his changes in Barca.

    • Yeah Idk why people are so surprised with Koeman. He has recent experience with reviving an aged squad, he's an ex Barca assistant coach and an ex Barca player. He knows the club, the people and as an added bonus he knows how to make Frenkie perform.

  • What Barca should have done is bring in Pochettino or Nagelsmann as the manager, and bring in Monchi or Luis Campos as sporting director. Nagelsmann would be a risk as he’s so young but he could potentially be the manager for the next 30 years if the risk payed off. Monchi seems more logical than Campos as he has experience in La Liga but both could potentially be at the club for at least 10 years. Pochettino would also be less of a risk than Nagelsmann as he has experience in La Liga and a lot more experience in coaching overall. Barcelona need to prepare for the future and stop living in the present, because Messi can’t save them forever
