  • Michael Schumacher wedged Mika Häkkinen life-threateningly into the wall 30 years ago - Häkkinen's impatience became expensive Today at 7:09 The two promises of the future came together in a memorable way 30 years ago.

    • The Macao GP is undeniably the crown jewel of the lower formula classes. The demanding but very fast street track leaves no room for error. Whoever gets there is undeniably a helmsman. The race, which ran towards the end of the year, had also garnered cream for Formula 3 drivers in the 1990 version. The starting list is rock hard in today's eyes. Häkkinen, Schumacher, Mika Salo, Eddie Irvine, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Olivier Panis ... everyone would succeed in formula number one. In addition, drivers who made great careers in other motorsport series settled in the starting grid. The two drivers still rose above the others. Schumacher and Häkkinen. The German had dominated the Formula 3 series in his home country, while Häkkinen dominated with his compatriot Salo the British counterpart. Häkkinen had been running a couple of invitational races in the German F3 series, but for the first time in Macau, two youth stars competed equally for superiority. Häkkinen took the first installment. But the fooling around didn’t garner praise.

    • Mika Häkkinen would not have had to overtake Michael Schumacher to win. It made Kolari even more bitter. Thirty years ago, the world of motorsport got its first taste of the battles of two legends. They would be seen many more times in the future on the brightest stage of all. The confrontation also provided a foretaste of Schumacher's unscrupulous will to win when needed. He was ready to toss a competitor even on the wall. Häkkinen got to experience it

Williams was by far the superior car that year bu michael was just that much better a driver than anyone else and ultimately won the title.

  • I'm 53, been watching this sport since the seventies, 40+ years... to my mind, Schumacher was the best. Absolutely the best.. Senna was the peoples champion, and rightly so, but Schumacher was so supremely talented that it's hard to argue with him being the greatest of all time... any weather condition, any tyre condition, if the car still moved he had it taped, even being stuck in 5th gear ffs... the rainmeister they called him... When Schumacher was in his prime, he could do anything, anything at all, he could do magic and often did. Keep battling Michael... we won't forget you...

  • I still remember when Schumacher won his first gp with Ferrari in Spain. Ferrari was struggling so much and Schumacher was being criticised a lot, and the GP was pure suffering and fighting and the joy at the end was immense. My family opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate Schumi and the Ferrari victory. Priceless memory!

  • Michael was committed 100% to win. That's what cost him a lot of sympathy points from both, viewers and drivers. But gained him title after title, record after record. He wasn't placed in a superior car - he created a superior car. He took any chance he saw, even when it went wrong. It was worth it to him. And he made mistakes. Those would have been accepted made by other drivers, but lacking sympathy points, he was painted as a bad person. And regarding Senna: it was Michael who chased him in his last races, gave him a real headache and forced him to give his very best - or lose to a newcomer. There will never be another Senna or another Michael, both of them were great at their time and both deserve to be on par in terms of respect. But that inch more goes to Michael. He truly is the GOAT.

    • The truth is out about Schumacher's career. His teammates all had to sign #2 driver contracts stipulating, before they even got in the car, that they had to play second fiddle. "That one area was that in every contract, whether I signed with Eddie Irvine, Rubens Barrichello or whoever they were - there was a clause there that they always had to play second-fiddle to Michael Schumacher" - Eddie Jordan. "At the time I handled people like Rubens Barrichello, Eddie Irvine, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jean Alesi, and every time we went to sign a contract with Michael Schumacher or Ferrari it always had conditions in it" - Eddie Jordan. "I had an opportunity to go to Ferrari but the contract that was offered by Jean was if Michael was 5th and I was 4th, I had to move over, if I was 1st and he was 2nd, I had to move over. Michael would have been in front of me, we all know that now but at the time I of course believed that I had the potential to be a world champion and I couldn't sign a contract that committed me to being a number 2" - David Coulthard. "If you look at Michael Schumacher, he never had a controversial team-mate. I was offered a Ferrari contract and it was a number-two contract. Clearly, Michael was a better driver than me but I couldn't sign a number-two contract because you're committing yourself to that, whereas Eddie Irvine was happy to sign it and milk it for all it was worth" - David Coulthard

    • @rae cool, interesting to know that -thanks for sharing didnt know it was to that extent? i rather would not support such kinds racing tbh since it takes away from the sport, but it is part and parcel of the team dynamics it is unfortunate, but true, happening with bottas and hamilton right now, to certain extent, as well i believe, just not as overtly-you see the team is in it for their name, and if they know that if theyd support one driver over another they get more chances at driver and even to some extent constructor champion legacy - then there you have it - may be there should be some new rules in place, preventing that, but then it would no longer be as much of a teamssport, which is fine because although team is important, from a driver stand point it also is very individualistic, albeits, they do depend on their race engineers/ mechanics at the end of the day, either way, something worth discussing, as a driver i would hate to hand over number one position to someone clearly behind me but as has been in history of formula1 the stronger drivers always had the preferential treatment to go forward and win more for the team, and as coulthard too concedes in the third quote you pasted, well he didnt know at the time but says "michael would have been in front of me" still respect his decision to believe in his own champion

  • Schumacher was the best driver of all times. It may not be forgotten that the Williams at his Benetton years and the Silver Arrows at his Ferrari years were better cars than his (you may also argue about Williams-BMW at least in terms of speed). Also Berger struggled a lot in Schumacher´s world champion car after Schumacher had left for Ferrari. If Hamilton would not have a Merc a car so much better than the others in terms of engine, aerodynamics and efficency he would not have been this successful.
