  • 55:19 i think its a survival tactic for countering existential crisis. No reason, no meaning in living but once something important to you from past is reminded you feel like there is something worth living for: either to recreate the same memory or to compare your present and be happier

  • The emotion Neville described in 1:02:40 is *Post Purchase Cognitive Dissonance*. Post Cognitive Dissonance can be anything that is not pursued/ less pursued after knowing something - e.g. smoking less after reading the health warning.

  • I am probably very late to comment on it. But I completely understand what Neville was talking about because a part of it covers spectrum of Autism (Shadow Side) and that's what forms a part of ground for Schema Therapy (for micromanaging multiple things). Thank you all 4 of yous to talk about such emotions. Because, many people just don't wanna register emotions like this which many a times forms a part of emotional neglect which is further associated with potential low self worth. Thank you boys for talking about it. I myself am going through Schema Therapy about Subjugation.

  • neville gave a safety pin example for nostalgia. but honestly its solely a memory. nostalgia is completely different which i think varun understood. if somebody got pinched by a safety pin, it creates a memory in your brain cells. it develops reflex memory overtime and when the incident is repeated, that part of brain cells are stimulated causing a reflex action. whereas, nostalgia is about emotion that you felt earlier and you are feeling right now.

  • I don’t know why some people didn’t like this episode. This has to be one of the best in my opinion! (And it is super hard to decide, you guys should know, for all the episodes are sooooo good!) Being a psychologist, I just loved the way you spoke so well about different emotions and broke it down to evolutionary purpose it serves, the expression and the experience of the emotions! What a greatttt episode!😍♥️ Thank you so much💯♥️

  • What is the evolutionary purpose of nostalgia .. dayum guys! Good one! My observation - Nostalgia definitely is a means of self preservation, also escapism to cope and give hope. ( like you guys mentioned) . I heard about this social experiment carried out with 25 citizens over the age of 65, where they were taken to a resort, with decor styles from their youth, music/ food from their era and stayed a week at this premises, no newspapers etc to remind them of current day. Those with severe arthritis made an attempt to dance, people who had been quiet for months, started to engage with others. Pretty fascinating !

  • Absolutely love your podcasts! I am undergrad psychology student and I just wanted to add to the phenomenon you all were talking about where when one person smiles and the other does too this happens because of neurons called the "mirror neurons" in the frontal lobe which is activated by performing an action or by seeing another person perform the same action. These neurons play a big role in imitation of others, understanding their intentions and feeling empathy. Psychopaths lack mirror neurons and hence they don't feel empathy at all.

Thanks for still continuing and making this whole situation better

  • I feel like the evolutionary function of nostalgia is in keeping the emotion of empathy intact in us. For example, what differs us from a robot who learns from experience? Basically the robot saves its experience as a memory while we save an experience as a memory in conjunction with an emotion we felt due to that experience.

  • Great episode. I'm a mom of two in my late-30s, and stress is my constant companion.. but, I have this inability to shed tears.. I cry maybe once a year. I don't remember the last time I shed tears. maybe I'm stoic.. I don't know. I am the complete opposite of the female stereotype of shedding tears at the drop of a hat. I feel like Chandler with his tin heart.. and whenever I cry, its because my heart can't take it anymore and its like a dam broke and I feel months of stress leaving me. very cathartic.. I know its weird.. but, sometimes I wish I had the ability to cry so that I can feel lighter once in a way.

We are few in number but we are there. All we want is someone to be okay with us like we are okay with them. We have a different personality, accept it and move on. Thank you for this Neville :)

    • So true. 💯 Agree. Just last night I had Lakshmi Puja at home and I usually start panicking 5 days prior to social gatherings n all. The event went normally though but the pain of the last 5 days was crazy. I really wish we were let to be the way we are. I'm usually burdened by the expectations and the pressure to act and sound "normal", which probably isn't even there for real. You are right. It's very few of us, but it's real.

It went like this - " In my 20s I was always worried about what people thought of me, in my 30s i didn't care about what people thought of me, it was only in my 40s I realized that they were never thinking about me at all".
