Has Ricciardo made an F1 career mistake that will benefit Alonso?

322 558 दृश्य

When Daniel Ricciardo decided to leave Renault for McLaren for 2021, it looked like a sensible decision given the French manufacturer's stagnation and a disappointing 2019. But Ricciardo took up the seat vacated by Carlos Sainz Jr during F1's enforced early-2020 shutdown, and since then Renault has finally shown signs of genuine progress on track. Does the Renault revival mean Ricciardo made a mistake jumping ship so quickly, and has he handed a golden opportunity to a returning Fernando Alonso for 2021?
Has Ricciardo made another career error?

  • Question is: does Renault being 3rd has something to do with Ricciardo. In a good way probably yes. But also Renault seem to me more consistent. This pilot can be a champion wherever he his.

  • No. Renault is shit, miles behind the play and nothing's going to change that. Alonso is no better than Ricci. 40 year olds are not consistent nor quick drivers either. Wanna bring up Michaels 2012 pole at Monaco? Nice. Look at the rest of the season, you just made my point. 7 DNF's, 5 finishes outside the top ten, came 10th twice and 7th 4 times. Leaving one pole, one 6th placed finish and one 3rd placed finish for the whole season. By comparison Nico only DNF'd twice and finished in the points 11 times. Feller even won a race. F1 is no country for old men.

  • I feel like there is so much behind his decision to switch. He is truly wanted at McLaren, Zak Brown has said he has been their target for years. He wants to work with Seidel. The Mercedes power unit has to be attractive. He must be pretty confident he is going to get on with his teammate. McLaren are known for a family atmosphere, no offence Renault don’t give off those vibes. McLaren and Brown give him other opportunities, they Indy car team, a GT team on the horizon, never stopped their drivers wanting to have a go at different things in the past. He is becoming more social media savvy in his own right, we know from Lando, McLaren won’t try to stifle that. I think given where he is in his career the opportunity to be happy but with a competitive team had to have some bearing on his decision. If McLaren open doors to him after F1 even better. Plus look at the company car he’s about to get. Or maybe just maybe he was aware of Alonso hovering in the shadows. We will never know did he jump for fear of being pushed? 🤷‍♀️

There are still some inherent major flaws in the Renault that have not yet been sorted out. It's not going to be a light and day difference, but definately an improvement. And then we have 2022 to worry about when it all gets torn up and start again anyway!!! LOL

  • Ricciardo is washed-up old news. He didn't "leave" Red Bull he was fired. They told him that Verstappen was their guy at #1 and he could be #2 or get out - so he got out. The only team to give him a job was the failing Renault team, who really does not have a #1 driver because they are not competitive. He's moving to a team with a new engine and who knows they will not be competitive next season, and just wants the sponsor money. Guarantee he will be kicked out after 2 years and be out of F1 for good

  • I believe Ricciardo has done a move comparable to Hamilton's when he moved to Mercedes GP. McLaren's only problem was the turbulent divorce with Mercedes back then. The Honda engine was a [risky] long term 'plan B' that didn't work out until its deadline. McLaren has a magnificent car design team - allied with a consistent engine the car definitely will deliver, as we can see today. Mercedes engines are coming back next year, thus 2021's season is greatly promising for the Woking team.

  • It’s a difficult situation for Ricciardo. At 31 years old, he would be thinking 🤔 , I have probably got 4 to 5 years left in F1. So depending which team he would choose, he would need to atleast stay with that team for 3 years minimum. He would have looked at Renault’s and Maclaren’s projected situation for the next 3 years and determined that Maclaren with a Mercedes engine, had a better chance of top three finish than Renault. He may have also thought that, within the next 4 to 5 years, Hamilton may retire and if he is driving well with Mclaren Mercedes that a door might open for a seat in Mercedes. There are so many scenarios that F1 drivers would be looking at. Fingers crossed 🤞 Ricciardo does well at Mclaren and wins. Anthony

  • Honestly McLaren signing an engine deal with Mercedes is a very big plus.... But also Renault has improved race after race

    Veres AndreiVeres Andreiमहीने पहले
  • The Mercedes carrot at McLaren is still a major factor. Riccardo has shown in the last few races that he is probably at least the #3 driver and the chance that he may get some horsepower parity with Hamilton is the clincher. Max is now in no mans land.

  • Ricciardo deserves a top team. I suppose that he thinks that because he does not have that opportunity now, he may as well go for cash in lieu of a championship. Obviously he felt Red Bull saw Verstappen as their future and he deserves better than that.

  • McLaren has a Renault engine this year and is outperforming the renault works team in most races, so they clearly have the superior aero package. They’re also still infront of renault in the championship even though they lost many points through engine issues. Ihope they can fit the Mercedes engine in their car without losing too much aero performance next year, but we’ll see their real performance in 2022

  • I wish Sainz didn't move from Mclaren. The partnership with Norris caused a positive mental attitude amongst the whole team (including its fan base) that has helped turn its fortunes around. I'm looking forward to Ricciardo joining Mclaren, but the press seem to focus on what the team will do for him, rather than the other way around. At least Mclaren can be safe in the knowledge knowing that the very same thing will be happening at Alpine but the demand for performance will be emanating from Alonso himself.

  • If past events are a trend, Ferrari isn’t the team to be at for 2022 when the new regulations come into play. Wrong move for Sainz in my opinion (they are also unlikely to catch up in the PU front) About Ricciardo...Difficult to tell, whilst is true he has pushed the Renault further up the grid than it deserves. We need to remember McLaren are having their own correlation issues with their car upgrades as well. I think they made a wrong choice with the Mercedes style nose. Will they be able to solve this development issues for 2022? McLaren don’t have a good recent track record with new regulations... in 2014 they produced a dog of a car, even behind the Williams.

  • I've always liked Renault. Followed the young Alonso. Loved the recent Renault improvements with Daniel of whom I am a huge fan. Followed Daniel since just before his Red Bull emergence. Hated the Red Bull betrayal of him in his last season there. Glad he went from Red Bull to Renault. But didn't like the crap Renault during the first season. Thought it a big letdown. But now, sad to see him leave Renault in a way. Ah...but McLaren...this McLaren...oh it looks so promising. And now another but...so does this Daniel Renault. As Daniel is just a fraction better, or at least equal, to the best young Fernando...so this McLaren may be the same fraction better than Renault. But here I'm unsure. If Daniel "feels" the McLaren as he sits in it, then the world championship will come. Daniel's definitely got world championships in him. Only the blind can't actually see that. It's there waiting to come out in HIS car. Maybe this McLaren. I'm going for it.
